I would write here more, but quite honestly, those people are terrifying and I have little interest in their wrath. I will leave that to the writing of Laura Collins and the team of lawyers at the UK’s own Daily Mail. Check out Laura’s story, and the horror’s involved here. Oh, and she is the largest collector and dealer in the paintings of Thomas Kinkade.

Soul searching pulled me West. Once here, the desert snuck in through the back door of the recesses of my mind, where imagination reins, subservient only to an unflinching curiosity. The desert piqued this curiosity, and planted a seed that required no water to grow.

She beckons me like a cruel beautiful lover, burning with passion, malicious with scorn, impossible to comprehend, harder to leave. Her voice speaks in two tongues, one soft sensual and raspy, shrouded in a worldly magic, the other a shrieking battle cry, embodying everything that is war and death.

This burnt earthen expanse, defined by absence, desirous of nothing, disguised in endless irreproachable void, yet demanding exploration.

I heeded the call West in hopes of finding a place to belong. I journey into the desert not for answers or belonging, but to experience for myself and tell a tale, a fictitious tale of my own creation. For non-fiction has no place in the search for magic, and the attempt to explain the pull to this unforgiving land. No, for this journey, facts would be fruitless. So, while my tool remains as documentation through glass and emulsion, my story is one of fiction.

While I am happy to have hours, days or weeks with a subject, I am also constantly working to cultivate that need for speed which I encounter frequently. This particular shoot – six precious minutes and three setups. The trickier part is trying to connect with a subject in that period of time. As someone who is decidedly not a multi-tasker, this is no easy task. The key for me is to understand exactly what I want to do before I ever lift the camera, which allows me to actually focus on a repertoire while shooting. As of late, I have been pairing this with a brief talk with my subject about what I’m looking for and what I hope their motivation will be. This has seemed surprisingly effective. On yesterday’s shoot (not this one), I even experimented with leading a breathing and visualization exercise, which I highly recommend. It was such a simple idea that only took about one minute, but seemed to leave my subjects ready to shoot without the need to warm up to much.

During my recent endeavor to incorporate yoga into my life, I’ve chosen certain words to focus on and come back to when I feel my mind stray. Among these are, stereotypically, creativity, but more importantly kindness and positivity. I have no doubt that my life and the life of those around me would be better if I could cling to those two words more often. When I met Keaton Williams, he embodied those terms. Not only did he remain positive through a winning bout with cancer, but he showed compassion both then and now for others navigating the same struggle. Throughout our short shoot at Disneyland where Williams works, I was continually reminded to check my own attitude. It was directly after this shoot that I rushed to my first yoga workshop, which spurred a commitment to take regular classes. And it’s to Keaton that I owe thanks for setting the intention in my mind for that first class – one that I hope will remain for a long time to come. While there may be plenty of people who are gun nuts in a mad dash to carry a concealed weapon, Pete Alexander is not one of them. Alexander was one of the first to apply for the permit after recent legislation eased gun regulation in California. Alexander is a proud gun owner and enthusiast. But these traits do not follow the conclusion that he is in a feverish rush to conceal a weapon as one could misconstrue the title of the article to imply. Alexander was a nice, relaxed upper middle class small business man who seemed to care deeply for family and have a sensible head on his shoulders. I say this to point out the fact that subjects chosen to illustrate a story are just that. They do not necessarily fully embody a story to any specific degree. They are often times simply an entry point for people to connect a real human to a larger idea or topic.

I often worry that readers will misconstrue an anecdote or character in a story to embody the whole. And while this is often the case when a story revolves around one character, this is not the standard. I recently read a piece of wisdom that stated a warning. When we hear gossip about a third party, remember that you have learned nothing about the third party, you have only learned about the one telling you the gossip. You have learned what they think about the third party, what their mannerisms and speech tell you. I would warn the same about anyone appearing in a news article. While journalism strives to be objective and truthful, it is still just words, and we should still think for ourselves without jumping to conclusions. I had a stretch where I found myself on the education beat for clients like The Wall Street Journal and Education Week among others. Pretty much any photojournalist has spent some amount of time dealing with the horror of classroom overhead lighting. I used to dread such shoots, but I’ve grown a fondness for them. It simply makes you have to be a bit more creative, try to see a bit harder, stay a bit longer. It’s a creative exercise really. But more than that, it’s a time I get to witness the true beauty of craft when a teacher really knows how to reach their kids. Their ability to act as educator, wrangler, friend, disciplinarian, confidant and inspiration all in one, and many time simultaneously. They are the ones really raising our next generation, and molding the future of our very existence. They never cease to impress me, and I beg the forgiveness of all the wonderful educators I gave so much trouble in my youth. My eyes were not fully open yet, but thanks to them for setting me on the path to wake up. So, if you’re with me still, go hug a teacher.

P.S., While shooting in the classroom might be a challenge, I looooooove shooting recess. Like fish in a barrel.

Photography is about so many things. It is about passion, love, excitement, change, beauty, injustice, creativity, evolution. It is about so much more. Sometimes, it is about problem solving, coping, bobbing and weaving, and throwing the plans out the window. When Kendrick Brinson and I woke up in our cabin in Santa Barbara to pouring rain, we saw the need to adapt in our direct path. It was on that dark gray day as buckets dumped from the sky that we were scheduled to lead a talk on creative portraiture outdoors using natural light.

Once we finished cursing our luck, we settled down enough to tear up our notes and start anew. It was this simple act of nature that spurred us to cram the full class into our tiny one-room cabin, and connect on a different level. We decided to teach our class how to use their understanding of light and a few tips and tricks to make the most out of a bad situation, like, say, a small cabin with dim window light. We took turns photographing our students and teaching them exactly how we produced the images and what went through our heads. The result was an intimate class that could have only happened by accidental magic. The photographs, much less important than the ideas.

The place was El Capitan Canyon, filled with beautiful scenery, inspiration, good friends, education, whiskey, coffee and dancing at an unforgettable and now annual event called Field Trip. The rain not only didn’t manage to dampen spirits, but instead created a muddy wonderland to embrace.

We also gave a lecture on the power of personal photography, and it’s ability to reignite our creativity and maintain the longevity of our career. It’s always an honor to speak at colleges and conferences, and I think any of us who have something to impart to others would benefit from doing so. After a long list of speaking engagements last year, we’ve been happy to continue the trend in education with Field Trip and the News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) conference where we were bookended in a daunting lineup with Barbara Davidson and Damon Winter, two of my own inspirations.

Above all else, it’s our goal to deliver an empowering message of positivity, creativity and encouragement. That’s all some people are waiting for to strike out for greatness. To read more about Field Trip, and hop on board for next year, go here.
